French Canadian Pork Pie (Tourtiere)

So growing up and going to Canada all the time to see my family, my grandmother would make this pie of meat which they call Tourtiere, we call it a meat pie.  We would have this with some ketchup on the side and some potatoes and vegetables.  I miss having this so I now make it for my family and they love it.  I hope you enjoy it. The process is not hard, You can either make your own crust or a store bought is fine,

INGREDIENTS FOR TWO NINE INCH PIES:

  • 4 pounds of ground pork
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  • 1 sweet onion
  • 4 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil for crust
  • 4 teaspoons of nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of clove
  • 4 teaspoons of pepper
  • 2 pie crusts with the tops, I get in the dairy section.

HOW TO:

In a large pan with oil, take the onion and chop into small pieces put in pan, take the spices and add into the onions, cook for about 5 minutes, add the pork. 

Cook this until meat is cooked through.  Take this and put in a food processor for a couple quick pulses.

Take out a pie dish and spray with cooking spray, put one of the layers of dough into the pan, pour the mixture in the crust and place the other layer on top.  I take a little olive oil and brush it onto the crust and sprinkle sugar on top. 

Place in a 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes.  Enjoy!!!
